Street Photography in Omiya: A Love Affair

Street Photography In Omiya

Omiya, situated in Saitama just north of Tokyo, feels indistinguishable from the metropolis despite being in a different prefecture. This hidden gem is often nicknamed "little Shinjuku" and doesn’t fail to impress. With hardly any tourists, some might argue it’s even better than its well-known counterpart. What captivates me is the contrast between the dark, gritty side of the station and the vibrant lights of the commercial area on the other side.

Famous for its lively Izakaya nightlife, Omiya also offers intriguing scenes during the day. The sun reveals long, narrow alleys filled with bars, food stalls, and a mix of people. A maze of tangled electric wires, aged with time, connects the colourful signs that light the way for nighttime visitors, now serving as a striking backdrop for our photos. This distinctive character stems from a bygone era, now captured in our images.

Across the tracks lies Omiya's business and shopping district, characterized by a shiny façade yet reminiscent of the past. Shopping here feels nostalgic rather than merely for the sake of nostalgia. This unique atmosphere is challenging to replicate.

The Hikawa Shrine is just a ten-minute walk from Omiya Station. Nestled in a spacious area, it features bridges, ponds, and massive torii gates. A long pathway lined with three large torii gates enhances the charm, while the shrine's bright orange stands out beautifully against the lush greenery.

A day of street photography at Omiya Station promises a rewarding experience. Whether during the day or night, there are abundant opportunities that guarantee coming home with fantastic shots and a memorable adventure.
