Street Photography in Shibuya: A Love Affair.
Shibuya
Shibuya is one of the busiest places on the planet. With its lights, energy, commerce, entertainment, and people on top of people—what's not to love? Some suggest avoiding Shibuya or Shinjuku because of all the tourists, but people are people, and a great photo is a great photo.
You will find great photo opportunities in Shibuya. At times, it almost seems a little unfair. Each location has something to offer. Shibuya Crossing is the most famous. I visit four to five different spots at the crossing, none of which actually include the crossing itself, which has its own options.
Moving on from there are many side streets, old, new, busy, dead, gritty, or brightly lit. Every direction is a good one. Closer to the station, take one of the many escalators or stairways to the elevated pedestrian walkways. There are miles of these walkways, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun casts long shadows, which is the best time.
I dedicated numerous years to professional engagements in Shibuya, utilizing each commute and lunch hour to capture street photography within the area. I have observed the remarkable evolution of Shibuya into the exceptional destination for street photography that it is recognized as today.
Avoid the naysayers and enjoy the crowds for an incredible street photography experience.
